Houston residents worried about economy and environment, Kinder survey finds

HOUSTON (HEIGHTSTONIAN) - Houston-area residents are feeling more discouraged about the economy and environmental threats heading into 2026, according to the latest Kinder Houston Area Survey from Rice University.

The survey, conducted in January and February 2026, included nearly 9,000 residents from Harris, Fort Bend and Montgomery counties.

What to Know

  • The economy was ranked as Houston’s biggest problem
  • Job confidence saw its sharpest one-year drop since the 1980s
  • More than 70% of residents are concerned about flooding, heat and pollution
  • Nearly 8 in 10 households earning under $25,000 cannot cover a $400 emergency expense
  • Researchers say stronger community ties improve health, safety and financial stability

Why are residents concerned?

Researchers found growing concern about slowing job growth, rising financial pressure and environmental threats across the Houston area.

The survey also found residents with stronger personal and professional connections were more likely to feel financially stable and safe in their communities.

Researchers said Houston’s long-term prosperity depends on stronger communities and social cohesion.

Houston's Climate in Winter: What to Expect and How to Prepare

Houston's winter weather can be unpredictable, ranging from mild and pleasant to cold and damp. As temperatures begin to drop, it's important to know what to expect and how to prepare for the season ahead.

What is Houston's Winter Climate Like?

The winter months in Houston typically run from December to February, with average temperatures ranging from the mid-40s to mid-60s Fahrenheit. While it's rare for the city to see snow, it's not uncommon for chilly rainstorms to sweep through the area.

While the city enjoys mild temperatures throughout most of the winter, it's important to keep in mind that Houston can also experience sudden drops in temperature. It's not uncommon for temperatures to dip below freezing for a day or two, so it's important to be prepared for the occasional chilly day.

How to Prepare for Houston's Winter Weather

The key to staying comfortable during Houston's winter season is to be prepared for any type of weather. Here are a few tips to help you get ready for the season:

  • Dress in layers:
    • With the fluctuating temperatures, it's important to dress in layers so that you can easily adjust to the changing weather. Start with a lightweight base layer, then add a sweater or jacket for warmth.
  • Invest in a good raincoat:
    • Houston's winter weather often includes rain, so it's important to have a good raincoat or umbrella on hand to keep you dry.
  • Check your heating system:
    • Even though Houston's winter is mild, it's still important to make sure your heating system is in good working order. Have a professional inspect your heating system to ensure it's ready to keep you warm on chilly days.
  • Insulate your home:
    • To help keep warm air in and cold air out, make sure your home is properly insulated. This can help lower your energy bills and keep you comfortable during the colder months.

With a little preparation, you can make the most of Houston's winter weather and stay comfortable no matter what the season brings.
