Houston residents worried about economy and environment, Kinder survey finds

HOUSTON (HEIGHTSTONIAN) - Houston-area residents are feeling more discouraged about the economy and environmental threats heading into 2026, according to the latest Kinder Houston Area Survey from Rice University.

The survey, conducted in January and February 2026, included nearly 9,000 residents from Harris, Fort Bend and Montgomery counties.

What to Know

  • The economy was ranked as Houston’s biggest problem
  • Job confidence saw its sharpest one-year drop since the 1980s
  • More than 70% of residents are concerned about flooding, heat and pollution
  • Nearly 8 in 10 households earning under $25,000 cannot cover a $400 emergency expense
  • Researchers say stronger community ties improve health, safety and financial stability

Why are residents concerned?

Researchers found growing concern about slowing job growth, rising financial pressure and environmental threats across the Houston area.

The survey also found residents with stronger personal and professional connections were more likely to feel financially stable and safe in their communities.

Researchers said Houston’s long-term prosperity depends on stronger communities and social cohesion.
